NUTRITIONAL ADVICE AND SUPPLEMENTS

NUTRITION
Everyone values fitness and health and we must constantly strive to achieve that balance in our lives along with all the other distractions that sometimes seem to deflect us from our path. With most people there is always a trigger that gets them started on the road to a healthier lifestyle. Sometimes its a book, medical advice, a comment from a friend, a brief sideways glance in the mirror or a feeling of being hung-over one too many times ... or sometimes a person just reaches a point where they simply say "Enough! I do not accept my unhealthy, overweight state and I'm going to change it ... today".
Whatever your motivation to get started once you begin you must keep going and make your new healthy life style into a habit. This is where nutrition plays such a key role. You don't have to starve or go on fad diets you just have to eat the right way consistently. We can devise personal nutrition plans to suit your needs. We are all different but there are some aspect's of a healthy diet that never change. Eat at regular meal times, have a protein breakfast, cut out pasta ,rice, potatoes and bread, drink 2 to 3 litres of water a day, eat as many vegetables as you can, sleep well, have only a limited amount of low/slow carbs, eat clean, organic, bio food whenever possible. Combine these simple basics with an effective targeted exercise plan and you are on your way to a healthy vibrant lifestyle.

SUPPLEMENTS

Here's a question we get asked all the time. If you do follow these guidelines and eat healthy then why take supplements ?  - The simple answer is, unfortunately most people don't, they just think they do. It's the story they tell themselves despite the fact they may be 10 or 20 pounds overweight ... that might be a clue ? :)

However if you are on this website then hopefully there is a good chance that you already follow a healthy lifestyle but  supplements can fill the gaps where perhaps you are not quite so thorough. It's a myth that you can get all the nutrients a healthy body needs from the food you eat. Why? Because if you exercise regularly and train hard you would have to eat a huge amount of a wide variety of foods to give your body what it needs. Over quite a short period of time free radicals can build up and damage your immune system, you may also have particular food intolerances that you are unaware of or perhaps you live a stressful lifestyle. I like to keep things simple and ask simple questions. How do you feel? What do you look like? Are you tired all the time? Do you sleep 7 hours a night? Do you know if you are deficient in magnesium? Do you have healthy gut flora and/or effective absorption? Do you have high cholesterol? Is your body always struggling to maintain an alkaline state ? How many fruits and vegetables do you eat everyday, consistently ? Are you tired during the day? Do you constantly get colds and flu? Do you have high blood pressure?
I have always looked on supplements as a form of insurance. I like to think I eat a healthy balanced and highly nutritious diet but just in case I will always supplement it with nutrients such as extra seaweed or spinach, fruits and fish oil , probiotics and vitamins.
Instead of having a never ending list of hundreds of different products we have broken it down for you to what we consider to be the top 10 supplements necessary for a healthy diet.

OUR TOP TEN SUPPLEMENTS
1 Superfood green
drink.
This alkaline powder is my number one recommendation and is  packed full of wild crafted nutrients such as spirulina, wheat grass, broccoli, parsley, kelp, spinach, ginger, Nepal cactus, enzymes, probiotics and many more. It's a SUPERFOOD what more is there to say!
2 Multivitamins (Juice plus) The dehydrated pulp of a huge variety of  fruits and vegetables, vitamins and antioxidants (and without the sugar). Like No 1 this is a 'whole food based' supplement and are crucial for maintaining  a healthy system.(For endurance athletes these are a must to combat those nasty free radicals).
3 Ultimate Omega 3 fish oils ,EPA/DHA.
Purified deep sea fish oil from anchovies and sardines.
4 Probiotics
bifidum, longum, acidophilus  essential for healthy digestion and absorption,

5 L-Glutamine.    To prevent muscle breakdown after training take this essential free form amino acid.

6 Magnesium (with B6).
Relieves stress, irritability, fatigue and aids restful sleep. I can't recommend the importance of magnesium enough, deficiency levels in most Western countries that have been studied are at epidemic levels.

7  Vitamin D.  I highlight this particular vitamin because it is essential for healthy bones by regulating calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood thereby maintaining healthy bones.

8   Zinc.  Even a small deficiency can be a problem. Make sure you get at least 10 mgs , (unless you eat Oysters every day because then you'll be literally swimming in this essential mineral !)

SPORTS SUPPLEMENTS
Weight training

9   Protein powders and BCAA's. I have heard it said that you can gain lean muscle mass without them. Try it. If you are prepared to eat a ton of protein fair enough but for the majority that's not going to happen so make sure you supplement your diet with at least 25 grams of protein after a workout and take BCAA's before, during  and after your workout as these are necessary to repair and rebuild your muscles for protein synthesis.  For variety, mix different  types of powders from time to time  e.g. Whey, Egg, Soy, Pea, Goat's milk and even Hemp  (which like Pea has a particular taste and not to everyone's palate).

Endurance
10  S-CAPS by Succeed     It  goes without saying that carbohydrate powders are vital for endurance sports  as well as gels and energy bars but the importance of sodium is often overlooked  and on very hot days  an absence can be lethal. These electrolyte replacement capsules are especially buffered and are the one thing I would never leave behind before going on a 5 hour run. They are the gold standard, they work and  on a very hot day at mile 65, they just might save your life.
